THE BORDER
Slovakia Director: Jaroslav Vojtek 2009 / 72 min. / Slovak-Hungaria version WITH CZECH AND ENGLISH SUBTITLES Cast: citizens of Velke Slemence and Male Slemence |
This documentary tells the story of a meaningless border which divides the village of Slemence, as well as the fate of its people. During the night of August 30, 1946, the village of Slemence on the eastern European border was divided by the Red Army into 2 parts. Velke Slemence remained in former Czechoslovakia, while the other part was renamed Male Slemence and became part of Ukraine in Soviet Union. The absurdly demarked border, similar to the famed Berlin Wall, divides estates, a cemetery, and closest families up to this day. The film has followed life in the divided village for 7 years and shows the bitter experience of people, who, on the most watched border of European Union, continue dreaming that it will soon open.
