News of the 17th Days of European Film
The 17th DAYS OF EUROPEAN FILM (DEF) festival of current European cinematography will take place this year in Prague in the Světozor and Lucerna cinemas from April 15 -22, after which it will continue in Brno in the B. Bakala cinema from April 23 -29, 2010.
The Echoes of the Days of European Film will be held in the following towns this year: Boskovice: April 26-29, Veselí nad Moravou: April 28-May 1, Jablonec nad Nisou: April 26-30, Uherské Hradiště: April 28-30, Plzeň: April 29-May 2 , Olomouc: April 26-28
Festival dramaturg Zdeněk Bláha has told us more about the 17th event, the film selection and basic sections:
"We have made certain changes in this year’s programme of the DEF compared to the previous years. We have changed the dramaturgic approach to the selection of films. In this respect we were careful to select possible films in cooperation with the embassies and culture institutes of particular countries, with the aim of choosing really high-quality films without being limited to concrete genres, in order to make the most versatile picture of the current European cinematography possible. At the moment, the programme includes some 40 films from 25 European countries that have been produced in the past two years. We have tried to choose films that could potentially address the Czech audience and that are at the same time representative for their countries of origin.
We will offer several festival sections. The main section will be The Best Of, which is basically a selection from national film productions. Apart from this, there is the National League section that will present at least some of the European films that have been nominated to represent their countries in the Oscar film awards competition. The third section, called To the Point, prepared in cooperation with the EU, focuses on a given topic. It is devoted to social issues and poverty, and shows various views of poverty and social conditions in general, not specific only to Europe."
